Netflix is gearing up to launch its new talent competition series Building the Band, and there are some famous faces joining the cast. Nicole Scherzinger and Liam Payne are among the judges for the show, which seeks to form a new music group — with a twist.

Nicole Scherzinger, Liam Payne Join Building the Band

Building the Band was announced earlier this year. The Netflix series will challenge musicians to work together without ever seeing each other face-to-face — kind of like Love Is Blind, but for making a new group.

The show has added a few famous judges — Nicole Scherzinger of the Pussycat Dolls, Liam Payne of One Direction, and Kelly Rowland of Destiny’s Child. Backstreet Boys member AJ McLean will serve as the host. Clearly, all four of these stars have experience in music groups.

They’re also no strangers to talent shows. Scherzinger and Rowland were both judges on The X Factor, and Payne was a contestant on the show. One Direction was formed as part of the competition back in 2010. In fact, Scherzinger was instrumental in putting the group together.

Even AJ McLean has talent show experience, having competed on Dancing with the Stars and RuPaul’s Secret Celebrity Drag Race, the latter of which he won.

Simon Cowell Is Working on a Similar Project

Scherzinger’s former co-star Simon Cowell, who some fans believe took undue credit for creating One Direction, is working on a new project of his own that has some similarities with the new Netflix project. Specifically, he’s searching for a new boy band.

Earlier this year, Cowell teased the new project on social media, saying he was looking for “future megastars” to join a new boy band. He led hopefuls to a website where they could sign up to audition.

Recently, the Daily Mail reported that Cowell had abandoned the concept (reportedly called The Midas Touch) and was instead working on a documentary about “coming to terms with the fact that maybe the era of the chart-topping boyband is over.”

However, a spokesperson for Cowell told HuffPost UK that this report was “entirely fabricated,” adding, “This project is primarily a search for a boyband, which is being documented; it is not a ‘show’, nor is it titled The Midas Touch, as the journalist claims.”
